The best JRPGs of 2015

JRPGs are evolving. They aren’t limited to turn-based adventures where a party of teenagers goes around the world, fighting evil, all because of a burned-down village. When it came time for Michibiku to salute its favorite JRPGs of 2015, we realized how the genre has diversified. This was a year full of rich, Japanese RPGs, but we felt these two innovative titles deserved our highest honors.

Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel will test your mettle, metal

The Legend of Heroes franchise has had a rocky localization history, but in recent years, XSEED’s commitment to bringing over its more robust titles has led it to a well-deserved place in Western JRPG fans’ hearts. While the Trails in the Sky games are more of a 2D throwback at this point, Trails of Cold Steel attempts to be more modern while retaining that scope and character that make a game a Trails game. It’s a tough task, but those who put the time into Cold Steel will once again be craving more by the time the adventure concludes.

Review: Stella Glow’s the end of a voluminous arc

It’s understandable if you find Stella Glow eerily familiar. It’s the last project from developer Imageepoch, which found much of its success with the Luminous Arc series, and there’s so much — from the battle systems and interfaces to the plot and character designs — that makes this game undeniably a spiritual successor. Two of the three games of that series were released in the West by Atlus, so even after the shift in Japanese publishers from Marvelous to Sega, Stella remains right at home in the hands of its old localization pal.
